Why so few characters for Preset Rename action vs Short Name (or revert to original name)?

Hi @james
The MC8 arrived today and I’m really surprised to see that only 4 characters are permitted for a Preset Rename action, and yet 10 characters are permitted for the short name. What’s even stranger is that a Preset Rename is able to revert to an orginal name containing 10 characters! This 4 character Rename restriction doesn’t make sense unless it’s a bug or a product limitation.

I’ve noticed the same disparate character limitations with Preset Rename on the MC6 Pro and MC8 Pro but this limitation is 32 characters vs 18 characters, so it’s not as noticeable because I don’t think many users would use more than 18 characters. However, the disparate limits are strange.

Are these character limitations a bug, are they by design, or are they a product limitation e.g. low memory etc?

A Trello card has been created for this request: Why so few characters for Preset Rename action vs Short Name (or revert to orginal name)?

It is a hardware thing. Each message in the MC8 only has 4 bytes to utilise, whereas in the PRO, we designed it for 16 (there about, i think). Can’t add more without doing a major overhaul. Reverting to original name is simply just calling the preset to load the name again, instead of storing the actual name in each message.

Ah, ok…that makes sense. I’ve seen a couple of posts about this on the board but there were no replies, so this is good to know. Thanks!
