Walrus Audio R1 not receiving MIDI channel assignment

Hi there. I’m trying to set my Walrus Audio R1 MKII to receive MIDI messages from my MC6 Pro. I’ve done this seamlessly with a Walrus Audio D1 MKII, which (at least according to the manuals) is the exact same process…so I’m confused.

Here’s a video of my process. I can’t see anything which I’m doing wrong.

If anyone could help out I’d be super appreciative. Thank you

It looks like it could be MIDI Thru settings being disabled on your pedal(s) higher up in the MIDI chain before the R1. Have you made sure to enable MIDI Thru for all devices that come before the R1?

Thanks for the reply!

The R1 is the first one in the MIDI chain. The current scenario from a M66 Pro POV is:

  • MIDI Out –> R1 –> D1 –> Chroma Console
  • Omniport 1 - Iridium
  • Omniport 2 - Cloudburst
  • Omniport 3 - Kernom Ridge

So it’s weird that it isn’t accepting anything. Any more clues?

The settings looks fine in your video. Since you are able to set the MIDI channel on the D1, how about you try the exact same preset that you used to set the channel on D1, on the R1 and see if it works, just to troubleshoot?

I believe that’s the MK1 on your board. Not sure if that makes a difference in your settings manual or not.

I have the mkii and mc6 pro communicating fine. I am going from omniport to 3.5. According to your vid, it looks like you’re going from 5pin din out> to 3.5 in?

If that’s true it might be the wrong type of cable.

@james I tried that. Still no luck!

@Turquoise I’m going from 5pin din out from MC6 Pro to 5pin din in on the R1 pedal

FWIW I think this problem is on the R1 side. Take a look at this video below. Maybe it’s just them being different, but when I put both of the Walrus pedals into the mode where they’re waiting to receive a MIDI message, the D1 flashes in a different way to the R1. For some reason the D1 continues to work just fine, but the R1 isn’t playing ball :sad_but_relieved_face: (you’ll see the D1 correctly receiving the MIDI message in the video, too)

Unless it’s something to do with the first pedal receiving signal from the 5pin out of the MC6 Pro and I haven’t turned on a random setting somewhere?

Ah, the R1 mkii has the 3.5 midi. Sorry for that.

What is CC 30 supposed to do on the R1? Have you tried changing just the R1 message to “release”?

In that first midi chain, each pedal is on a different channel (R1, D1, Chroma…)?

Finally, on the R1 1st gen, do you need to use the online editor to select a midi receive channel, or is it a button knob combo on the pedal?

It’s possible to filter the midi outs per channel. Maybe that’s the issue. Check the ‘controller settings/midi channel settings’. See if 5pin Din is set as an output for the R1 channel.

Can confirm that the 5pin was selected for the channel the R1 is connected to.

I’m out of ideas!

CC 30 is the bypass switch, so yeah 127 ON 0 OFF. Haven’t tried release - will give it a shot and report back.

Correct!

No according to the manual for the firmware update, it’s just a matter of pressing the two stomp switches down at startup, then waiting for them to flash, then it waits to receive a message from a channel, and that channel becomes the one it listens to moving forward (page 9)
