USB noise - Mood and Nano Cortex

I’ve got a weird, or at least very specific, one. I’m getting a somewhat faint high-pitched hum from my pedalboard. And I’ve isolated it to the following three pedals: the Chase Bliss Mood MKII, the Neural DSP Nano Cortex, and the MC8 Pro. The noise is coming from the connection between the Nano Cortex and MC8 Pro via USB. If I unplug the USB-C cable from the either the Nano Cortex or the MC8 Pro, the noise goes away. Interestingly, if I take the Mood pedal out of the chain, the noise also goes away (even with the USB connection maintained between the Nano Cortex and the MC8). So the noise seems to be created by a combination of the 3 pedals (and I hear it even if the Mood pedal is off, so long as it’s in the chain).

I’m using a Cioks DC7 to power everything, so my power is isolated.

One option would be to connect the Nano Cortex via the 1/4” MIDI input instead, but (a) I’m out of Omniports on the MC8 Pro, and (b) I think that makes it harder to program the expression functionality in the Nano Cortex, which I use a lot. So I’m hoping for a solution that allows me to continue connecting the MC8 Pro and Nano Cortex via USB-C. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to get rid of the noise? Thanks!

Hi,

there are relatively cheap USB isolators available. That should do the trick.

For example:

Ah good thought. That sort of device would be tricky, because I’d have to do a couple USB-C to USB-A conversions which I’d prefer to avoid. But I did some research and ordered a Chroma Cable that I read could help resolve this issue, so I’m hoping that might do the trick. I’ll report back here once it arrives and I test it.

I can attest to the usefulness of this device—I use a laptop for sequences as tracks for live performance, and get a hum from my MIDI interface. This USB isolator (sure looks like the one!) eliminates the noise.

The MC6 Pro lets me control so much!

I’m following up here after some further experimentation, etc. I’m still having this same noise issue and I’m very, very confused as to what’s going on.

The noise is there even when I use a 1/4” TRS for MIDI, instead of USB. The noise is there even when the Nano Cortex is unplugged from power. Even with no power, with the MIDI connected from the MC8 Pro to the Nano Cortex, I hear the high-pitched noise. As soon as I disconnect the MIDI, it goes away. This is the case whether I disconnect on the MC8 Pro end or the Nano Cortex end.

In fact, the noise is there even when I power off both the MC8 Pro and the Nano Cortex. So long as the MIDI is connected the noise remains. Similarly, if I disconnect the MIDI connect to the Mood, the noise goes away.

The common device here seems to be the MC8 Pro, so I think it’s an MC8 Pro issue, though I can’t for the life of me figure out how to fix it. Does anyone have any thoughts?
