Noise generated by MIDI 5-pin OUT to amplifier RET

Gear: Victory V22, using RET as signal input. Captor-X, using amp OUT, receiving MIDI PC from Morningstar 6 MIDI 5-pin OUT for cab changes only! Iridium for amp modelling, cabs disabled. Iridium receives MIDI PC/CC from Morningstar 6 via TRS Multiport to Iridium TRS Multiport.

I hear a high pitched drone when using the Morningstar 6 connected via TRS to the Iridium with it’s audio output going to my Victory RET input. If I disconnect the TRS multiport on either the MS6 or the Iridium, all noise goes away, as does ability to send MIDI PC/CC.

  1. Changed power supplies on all, no change.
  2. Changed MIDI cable, no change.
  3. Used an Radial isolating transformer, on audio output from Iridium no change.

Workaround is to use a Midi Mouse (w/ or w/o a common power supply), which means tap dancing to change amp models n the Iridium and cab models on the Captor-X simultaneously. Is there a way to isolate the MIDI output issue between the Iridum and MS6 while maintaining the ability to use both the Multiport (to Iridium) and the MIDI OUT (to Captor-X)? Did I miss anything?

SOLUTION FOUND! ::
I suspected it was a grounding issue (loop), did a bit if MIDI research, and found that it can and has happened in the past with other gear. I simply cut the ground on one end of the TRS cable and voila, golden silence & the ability to switch cabs via MIDI on the fly! Where does the fault lie - with the MS6 or with the Iridium, or both? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this as swapping out a simple TRS cable is no longer an option with molded ends!

Solution #2 may be using a TRS with no RING connection. Iridium RX’s on TIP, and sends MIDI out on RING connection., but the GND would still be there, so not sure if I could get a TIP only cable to work between the Iridium and the MS6 (I did!) SO, you only need a TIP only signal to the Iridium from the MS6 w/GND cut on one end, assuming the cable ground thru to other end is connected (as with molded 1/4" plugs, which is likely standard.)

regarding the ground loop, the issue is because isolation is not implemented in the Iridium MIDI IN port. If you use a multimeter meter to test, the grounds between the MC6 and Iridium are connected.

The MIDI IN port should have been isolated with an opto-isolator so the grounds are not connected to prevent ground loops. Which is why Strymon sells a MIDI Exp cable for use with the Iridium, with a built-in isolator: MIDI EXP Cable - Strymon

I guess that’s the price to pay to have Exp + MIDI IN in one port.

The cable ground/shield is connected to the MIDI OUT port (from the sender) to “protect” the signal in the cable, similar to how audio cables shields are grounded. but there is usually no issues if you cut the ground from the cable on one side - I have not come across this instances yet.

“Simply” does not apply to this situation to me, I have no idea how to do it! Pointers? Is it possible to do this with a Rockboard flat patch cable without destroying it?

If you can open up the patch plug’s jack connector and see where the wires are soldered to the pins, snip the cable connected to the sleeve…
