ML5 ring/sleeve shorting?

Hi @james

I couldn’t find this info in the manual or in the FAQ.

Are ring and sleeve shorted at all for sends and/or returns?

Reason: I want to connect my Helix Rack to a loop, but I want to use one of its XLR outputs with lifted ground on the return. I have an XLR to TRS cable and need the ring and sleeve shorted at the ML5 end.

I don’t own and dont know much specificaly about the ml5. However ,I believe its fully mono. Mono generally means ring and sleave are connected.

yeah i think you would need to make a custom cable

I measured ring/sleeve continuity in an active loop (return) and they appear not to be shorted. I guess this is to allow stereo effects to be connected – you get the tip (L) channel of the signal without grounding the R channel.

I’m guessing this is because some stereo pedals don’t like having an output grounded, but it would be nice to have this confirmed.

It is a mono jack so there is one connection for Tip and one connection for Sleeve on the jack.

If you connect a TRS cable, the Ring will just be left floating i.e. not connected to anything.
