Anyone using the new Boss DM101 successfully with their morningstar goods or any other midi control? I cannot for the life of me get mine to receive incoming midi CC from either my MC6 or Selah Quartz V3 (my clock). I’ve tried multiple midi cables, midi adaptors (morningstar TRS/midi adaptor), even the suggested Boss TRS/midi cable. I’ve tried every setting on the MC6 onmniport with all these cables and then did the same thing with my Quartz and still couldn’t get it to receive clock or a single CC message.
Have setup the DM101 midi settings using its manual/midi manual and even tried testing it to receive on a few different channels (1-16) and still nothing. I’m at a loss. Reset the pedal and even try it all over again a few days later in case I’ve skipped the simplest step. Now trying to find anyone who’s got theirs up and running with midi yet and try so I can compare settings/products they used to get it working. Minimal info on the boss manuals so you’d think there couldn’t be anything I’m possibly missing, but appears there is.
There is a third manual called ‘reference manual’ (because Boss) did you check that, too? There is some (cryptic) stuff about how to set up the midi channel, turn on cc in, midi clock etc.
Thanks, mate, unfortunately that’s one of the ones I used to set it up and set the midi channel on the unit.
And you’ve set ‘CC In’ , ‘PC In’ and Midi clock to be on? (p 17)
Yeah, tried setting it up on a few different channels cause I couldn’t get it to work on ch10 to start.
Sadly this is typical of Boss MIDI. They have the worst and most confusing MIDI of any manufacturer I’ve used. Ridiculous that they can’t implement it in a user friendly logical manner given Roland were one of the manufacturers who wrote the standard. Even if the MIDI works it crashes the pedal under load. I have an SY200 and if i send a stream of filter sweep info over midi it ‘buffer overflows’ and completely crashes the pedal. It’s inexcusable and I wouldn’t touch any Boss pedal if i need to control it over MIDI
I’ve had great success with the Boss DM-101 and MC6 Pro. That is after updating these settings on the DM-101 (as mentioned by @GuitarWolf)
- Receive CC Messages to On
- Receive PC Messages to On
- Receive MIDI Clock to Auto
- Setting the MIDI Receive Channel to match the MC6 Pro
The DM-101 doesn’t have an “infinite repeats” feature on the tap button like a lot of digital pedals do (Strymon) BUT, you can set the MC6 up to do just that, which is awesome. Hint: it seems like MIDI CC value 111 is about where the DM-101 starts to oscillate for me. So, you probably don’t need to go all the way to 127. I’m curious to know if every model is slightly different given the analog business of the thing.
PS - Boss’s MIDI Implementation document on their website for the DM-101 belongs in 1998. It’s awful.
