Hi,
I have a morningstar MC8 Pro, which doesn’t seem to read incoming midi from the MIDI DIN nor from the MIDI TRS from external midi devices.
I have the latest firmware and the according editor.
Midi thru is turned on (I tried also turning it off and on, and rebooting) :
I am monitoring midi on the USB device (my laptop, reading it on ableton live). There i can see that the messages from the internal MC8 pro switches are arriving, but none of the midi from the external midi devices is passed through.
The midi monitor in the morningstar editor also shows no messages from the external midi devices, only those from the morningstar itself.
I tried different controllers to send midi to the morningstar (faderfox, uc4, ec4, really top quality controllers), and both DIN and TRS.
I also tried using the ‘Midi message converter’ to map incoming midi, converting it at the input, to CC10-value1, ie to trigger the press on switch/preset A. But this also did not work.
What is wrong? Is this a known issue? I saw some other posts about users having issues with midi thru not working on (other) morningstar devices which remained unresolved. This would be a huge bummer for a 500eu midi controller which is supposed to be pro grade.
Any ideas what could be done?
Best regards,
Bart
Are you using the web browser version of the editor? If not, I suggest you try this because it is always the most up-to-date version.
MIDI Thru most definitely works because I use this all the time, so something isn’t right with your setup. I know this doesn’t help you right now but we’ll help you get to the bottom of things.
I know you’ve said you have the most recent firmware but can confirm that’s it’s 3.13.6?
Indeed, I have version Firmware v3.13.6. Using the editor online through the webbrowser or the offline version of the editor (I tried both) does not make any difference.
The issue is confirmed to be the Morningstar, as sending receiving midi with pro gear works seamlessly.
Eg faderfox to oxi one to ableton → ableton receives midi thru
Oxi one to faderfox to ableton → ableton receives midi thru
Oxi one to MC8pro to ableton → ableton receives no thru, only the MC8pro’s own messages
Faderfox to MC8pro to ableton → ableton receives no thru, only the MC8pro’s own messages.
Hi,
Did you enable midi through in general?
Isn’t that a screen shot of the MKII series? The Pro series has individual port thru.
Indeed, thank you for your reply, the individual port thru is set as per the first screenshot. I also tried enabling all thru (not supposed to help, but tried it just in case this was a bug circumvention) but to no avail.
I found the issue, and it is my mistake, so apologies for suspecting the Morningstar to be at fault. The problem was twofold:
-The DIN cable (DIN 5) was not aligned well to the DIN 7 port on the morningstar. Fixing this made the MC8 receive midi from the DIN properly
-The TRS IN is apparently Type - A only, whereas the Faderfox line is all Type - B. According to chatgpt the TRS Type cannot be set in the Morningstar (in the faderfox I know you can’t either). A solution would be to use a TRS-A to DIN on one end and a TRS-B to DIN on the other.
You can change the Morningstar Omniport MIDI Out to MIDI Type B. See the dropdown menu for the Omniport options.
Yep, this is the MC8 or MC6 MKII settings, not the Pro settings.
