MIDI Issues & Midi Box Questions?

got a lot of midi devices on my board and since somewhere amongst some of the recent changes i’ve made (pedal/routing swaps), i noticed some weird behaviour including midi data noise. for example seem to be hearing the clock tick, like a constant chk chk chk etc. and noises from midi commands sent.

basic chain is mc8pro > microcosm > midibox > 8 pedals >> and a couple of the pedals chain thru to 1 or 2 more. aside from the midi cabling, all pedals running into an ml10x. most individual loops and a couple with some specific chains. everything is powered by a dc7+C8, all isolated, except for an od & distortion which i’ve tested with/without and it doesnt eliminate it. midi clk coming from the microcosm, which works fine to all pedals but also seems to be primary noise.

  1. noise; something seems to be causing noise from the midi data, definitely more pronounced when distortion is engaged of course but can’t seem to narrow it down what it could be? all the midi cabling is new (CME), could a poor instrument cable be causing it?

  2. the midibox, this might be paranoia, but the midibox lights always going crazy which always assumed is just the clk data. some of the troubleshooting ive done like unplugging things from the midi box has resulted in some odd behaviour thats repeatable. like theres two ports set to CBA type on the dips, when i unplug one of them which is for a CBA pedal on midi#3, it changes to a specific preset on my ML10x which is on midi channel1, which i can’t explain why that would happen?

i can’t see how as only thing in is mc8pro>microcosm>midibox, everything else just flows thru from the midibox but could there be weird data or loops going on somewhere or some way i’ve setup the mc8pro? pretty much just default as far as i can see and yeh aside from the noise, all controls work as expected.

so i think i managed to solve this, my first four tip/ring loops were loop A with overdrive and a xp300, then loop B with a big muff and a whammy+hog2…

the xp300 and whammy being AC with their own adapters. everything else being entirely isolated on cioks ports.

after re-arranging with tip/ring A loops to be the overdrive & distortion pedals and tip/ring B loops with the xp300 & the whammy+hog2, the midi data noise seems to have gone.

the only things taking midi are the whammy.& hog2, so guessing theres some weird electrical or grounding thing happening over the ML10X input with tip / ring loops when combining a dirt pedal with AC/midi pedals. thats what was throwing me, thinking the clock and other noise was maybe some midi feedback loop but all the midi was essentially point to point from the midibox to whatever midi pedal.

still can’t explain the weird midi behaviour where presets would change on specific channels when unplugging midi inputs from pedals operating on diff channels… but hey, its not something you do once setup.. maybe it’s some quirk of midi?
