Midi Clock Thru on MC8 Pro

I am trying to send the midi clock from a MPC live 3 thru the MC8 pro but It is not working.

  1. Firmware v3.13.6.250827541

  2. Ignore midi clock is off

  3. Midi clock port settings are all selected

  4. Midi thru are all selected

  5. Midi channel output ports are all selected

  6. When I connect the MPC directly to the pedal I am trying to set up, the clock is sent but it does not work via the MC8 pro.

What am I doing wrong?

How is the MPC Live 3 connected to the MC8 Pro? DIN?

Yes, the MPC DIN connection

Okay, let’s try two different ways:

  1. Ignore MIDI Clock = ON, MIDI clock Persist = OFF, MIDI clock ports all cleared, and all MIDI THRUs checked. ( here, trying to get the MC8 Pro to just pass it straight through and ignore it)
  2. Ignore MIDI Clock = OFF, MIDI clock Persist = ON, MIDI clock ports all checked, and all MIDI THRUs cleared. ( having the MC8 Pro reinterpret incoming clock)

If number 2 ends up working, it’s possible you might see some drift, because it’s generating a new clock based on the old one. That shouldn’t be a problem if we can get method one working.

Let me know how it goes. I’ll test it out myself if nothing works for you.

Tried both. Neither one works

Okay, the settings that worked for me:

  • MIDI Clock Persist Off
  • Ignore MIDI Clock Off
  • MIDI Thru ON from your incoming clock port to your outgoing clock port
  • MIDI Clock Port off

This still does not work

Also turning on Midi clock port settings to DIN MIDI does not work

You’ve mistaken the MIDI Thru Settings for MIDI Clock Port Settings. Based on your screenshot, all your MIDI Cock Port Settings are disabled. You need to enable the ports you want to send MIDI Clock out of. In your case, that’s DIN MIDI.

do you know if any other MIDI is getting through from the MPC?

  1. What did you mean above when you said “MIDI Clock Port off”?
  2. When I send the midi clock out from the MPC directly to another guitar pedal the clock comes in fine.

This also does not work

Let’s take this step by step.

  1. Set your MC8 Pro so that Ignore MIDI Clock is OFF and MIDI Clock Persist is ON. The ports don’t matter for this test. Does the MC8 Pro show the clock bpm in the lower right side, and does it update with the external device?

If yes, then you are getting clock to the MC8. If no, then you are not. Check your cabling and connections as well as your output settings on the MPC.

  1. If MIDI Clock is not coming through, can you try sending bank changes to the MC8 Pro? Create a MIDI track on the MPC and have it send an arbitrary PC message on the MIDI Channel specified in the MC8’s General Configuration. When triggered, this PC message should change the bank of the MC8 Pro, i.e. PC 30 => jump to PC 31. If this doesn’t work, then you’re not getting ANY MIDI to it.

Let’s say you ARE getting MIDI to it:

  1. Let’s test the other end. Unplug the MPC for now. Set up MIDI Clock Persist = ON and under MIDI Clock Port Settings , check the output port you want for MIDI Clock.

Set up one test switch with a preset that can change the downstream pedal in some way. Does it send MIDI normally?

Set up another test switch with Press (pos:both) : MIDI Clock Tap. Press that a few times so that the MC8 generates a MIDI Clock. Do your downstream devices sync to this MIDI Clock?

Thanks for all your help. It was the midi cable (even though that same cable works in other connections) I wish I would have known earlier that the BPM is supposed to show up on the screen.

did you plug it in wrong? I think we have 7 pin holes to allow for powered connections, so sometimes i see cases where a 5 pin cable is misaligned by 1 pin in either direction.
