MIDI Clock Throughput

Hi Morningstar people.

First post - newbie. I’ve seen the feature I want to request on the Trello board. It’s called “Add option to only pass MIDI clock through and not other MIDI types”

I wanted to make a post to add some credence to this request (sorry if it’s in the wrong place, I’m not a forum person).

In my case, the rig is H90 clock > MC6 > Source Collider.

When “MIDI Thru” (in the controller config) is turned off, I can’t pass the tap tempo from the H90 to the Collider. This seems to be the way things work currently.

I can’t turn on MIDI Thru on the MC6 without encountering overflows in my rig. The reason - I like to use the H90 to change banks on the MC6 (makes for a smoother interface).

I don’t want to use the Tap functions on the MC6 because that requires more switches etc. The H90 will do a great job - all i need is an option to pass thru the MIDI clock only.

This is correct. When MIDI Thru is turned off, none of the incoming MIDI messages going into the DIN MIDI IN port will be passed through to the MIDI Outputs.

What kind of overflows are you referring to? Are you connecting the Collider back to the H90?

Hey james,

Nah, the MC6 and the H90 are both on midi channel 2, and switch banks for each other as well as themselves. The reason I have it setup like this is so I can scroll through banks on the MC6 using the knob/push button on the H90 and/or switch the H90 preset with bank jumps on the MC6.

It works really well, but it means I can’t use the H90 for tap tempo - and I want it all clearly!!

What other pedals are there in the MIDI signal chain? If the H90 is the last in your chain, it sounds like you can just turn MIDI Thru to OFF so that the MIDI messages do not get passed though in an infinite loop.

Hey James,

My MIDI Thru is OFF ! What I want, if it isn’t clear, is for Morningstar to create an option to have “MIDI Clock Thru Only” - so I can use the only the clock from the H90.

Sorry if this isn’t making sense! But my rig works. I just want the clock/tap tempo from the H90 - because it’s the best total use of my footswitches.

I meant the MIDI Thru on the H90, not the MC, and then move it to the last pedal in your signal chain.

I’m not sure if this is something we will implement yet - but if you want a quick solution, I can just hardcode the MIDI Clock through in a custom firmware for you.

Unfortunately, the H90’s midi implementation is pretty underwhelming. In my case, I need it to transmit MIDI messages to control the MC6 so i already have the Thru turned off.

The ‘thru’ i am using on the on the H90 which threatens overflows is not a proper thru, it’s just transmitting the preset changes on PC by proxy of being on the same midi channel as the MC6.

Sorry it’s not that easy to exaplain. I would love a hardcoded fix! I just need that clock!!

Hey James,

Is there any chance this custom build might become a reality? Of course, I have no idea how much work that actually involves!

There are several filter boxes on the market that can be placed between the H90 and the MC6 which can remove all the data you don’t want to transmit. Have you explored those at all? Or is that out of the question? I can make a couple recommendations.

I didn’t actually consider this but honestly my board is super tight I don’t think I could fit another box in there!

Sorry I missed this - just to confirm is it the MC6 MKII or MC6 PRO?

No apologies needed, your help is a luxury!

MC6 MKII !

You can give this firmware a go. MIDI Clock should still pass through if MIDI Thru is turned off. Let me know how it works for you.
