MC6 Pro midi clock strange behavior

Hi,

I’m using the MC6 Pro. I just got it recently and am learning the ins and outs of it. I’ve got it connected to a Wampler Metaverse and was trying to use the midi clock on the MC6 Pro to control the tempo of the repeats. I was using the midi clock with a press action and I set the BPM. I could see the number on the right hand screen, but it was black. No matter what BPM I entered, the Metaverse would not change (and I had set the bank to enable the Metaverse to accept the incoming midi clock).

I happened to change the midi clock type in the editor to midi clock tap. Then the BPM on the MC6 Pro turned red in color on the little screen and had a blinking dot. This worked! I then toggled back to Midi clock in the editor and the BPM remained red and blinking. It was like I had to use the tap feature to get the BPM to actually work.

However, upon powering down the device, it goes back to its first behavior. The BPM is black. I have to connect back to the editor, change it to tap, engage the pedal to get the number to turn red, then I have to change back to midi clock. I’ve enabled the screen to move the tempo and and down and that does work…but only as long as I have the device powered up. This is obviously not a gig ready solution.

Actually, the midi tap tempo function seems stable. I disconnect from the editor, shut down the MC6 Pro, restart it, and using the footswitch for the tap tempo gives me a red number. However, I want more precise tempo control. For the time being, I used the shift option so I can long press the switch I’m using for tap tempo, and that toggles to the midi clock. If I’ve already tapped to get a red number, I can then switch to midi clock and the number stays red. But if I go there first without tapping, the number is black. For some reason the MC6 Pro wants to see a tap in order for the midi clock to work.

I’m seeing the power of the device, and will give it more time. I’ve ordered y cables for the ML10X. I just hope all this works the way I see it in my mind. This is not a small investment.

Hi. I’m not quite sure I understand your challenge fully. Are you saying that you just want to automatically start sending MIDI Clock upon power up and be able to + (increase) and - (decrease) BPM on the fly?

By default, the MC6 PRO will not start sending MIDI clock unless you tell it to by pressing a switch. We explain that in this video. If you want the MC6 PRO to send MIDI Clock automatically upon power up, you can too. Just add an On Enter Bank MIDI Clock message to your first bank. In this screenshot example, the controller sends 129 BPM MIDI Clock automatically on power up:

You can increase and decrease BPM using the Utility message type.

Hi Brandon,

Thanks for replying. I had tried your suggestion to begin with and the BPM was not displaying in red. I think the root cause is related to your help article that I found in another post - MIDI Clock is not working | Morningstar Engineering Helpdesk

I again added the midi clock to the On Enter Bank option, disconnected from the editor, powered up the MC6 Pro, and the BPM was displaying in red, problem solved!

However, I did want to let you know if I go to the Preset editor instead of bank editor and add the midi clock to a press, then save, disconnect from the editor and power up the MC6 Pro, even pressing the switch does not cause the BPM to show in red. So it appears that I need to add the midi clock to the On Enter Bank option and also have it set to a Preset press if I want to be able to move the tempo up and down. Simply adding midi clock to a Preset press without adding it to the Bank On Enter does not work for me. This is not a huge deal and maybe it’s the intended behavior, but for the end user I was quite confused for awhile.

Regarding your last paragraph, that should not be the case. We’ve just tested it and it works as intended. When the controller powers up, no MIDI clock is being sent. When we press the switch, MIDI clock starts sending and blinking red. You do not need the Bank message. Are you on the latest firmware?

Hi Brandon, yes I’m on version v3.12.9. I did a system restore and rebuilt my bank from scratch (I had only created one bank). I can confirm that if I add the midi clock to a preset, the BPM is black even if I change to a different BPM. The only way it works is if I add the midi tap (and I must tap first to get the BPM in red, then I can change the BPM using the midi clock) I also must have the midi clock persist setting enabled. This allows me to not have to add the midi clock to the On Enter Bank.

I’m wondering if there’s a problem with my unit. When I power it up, the window on the left is pixelated 50% of the time. I disconnect from the power and turn it on again and it works, but it’s literally every other power up that the left window is pixelated. I think I’ll go ahead and send you an email, I was reviewing your warranty page.

Hi @benjamin I sent an email to your support email address regarding the issue with the left screen on the MC6 Pro. I’m not sure if that is also related to the mid clock, thanks.
