MC6 PRO don't working to Nixie 2

Hi everyone,

I’m having trouble connecting my Strymon Timeline to Nixie 2 through the MC6 Pro.

  • MC6 Pro firmware: v3.13.2
  • Nixie 2 version: 2.2.0 (200)

I’ve tried connecting via USB and WIDI Uhost, but nothing works.

Has anyone else experienced this issue or found a solution? I’ve tried several configurations with no success.

Here’s my current MIDI routing setup:

MC6 Pro OUT → Quad Cortex IN → Quad Cortex OUT → Timeline IN → Timeline OUT → BigSky MX IN → BigSky MX OUT → MC6 Pro IN

Thanks in advance for any help!

Just to troubleshoot, exclude the Quad Cortex in your signal chain first so you can be sure that the SysEx messages are passing through.

Let’s troubleshoot with USB first ( not the uHost).
Your MIDI Thru settings should be like this:

In the Editor Settings tab, there is the MIDI Thru Check function:

If everything is wired correctly and all your device settings are correct (MIDI Thru is on etc), then clicking on the Send Sysex button will get you this:

What is happening is that the Editor sends a SysEx message, and is expecting to receive the same SysEx message back, similar to how Nixie would work.

Hi James, thanks for your help!

Before changing any parameters, I tested the MIDI Thru Check, and it worked — but Nixie 2 still didn’t connect.

Then, I applied all the suggested settings and performed the troubleshooting steps. The MIDI Thru Check worked again, and all MIDI messages like clock, preset changes, etc., are being sent and received correctly.

However, Nixie 2 still doesn’t recognize the Timeline , no matter what I try.

Any ideas on what else could be causing this?

Check your timeline settings per this tutorial

Also as mentioned the Quad Cortex might not pass large sysex

Thanks for the follow-up!

I’ve double-checked, and the Strymon Timeline and BigSky MX are configured correctly according to the official MIDI guide.

I couldn’t find any documentation indicating that the Quad Cortex blocks or limits large SysEx messages , but just to be safe, I ran all of James’s tests both with and without the QC in the chain — and in both scenarios, the MIDI Thru Check worked perfectly .

Still, Nixie 2 doesn’t detect the Timeline at all, even though everything else (preset changes, clock messages, etc.) is working fine.

At this point, I’m wondering if there’s something specific about how Nixie handles SysEx communication that might be causing the issue.

I would see if you can connect Nixie with the Timeline. Get that going , then add the Mobius..etc etc until you find the culprit
Good Luck

Are you using Windows or MacOS?

If Windows, there is this thing where if a software (like the morningstar editor) is connect to the MIDI port, then other softwares cannot access that same MIDI port. Try closing the browser for the editor (and other MIDI software) and see if you can get that to work.

Thanks, James!

I’m using a MacBook — does this issue also apply to macOS?
Just wanted to confirm if the same USB-related behavior affects the Mac as well.

Thanks again!

No, this behaviour doesn’t exist in macOS. I’ll set something up tomorrow to test Nixie2

Perfect, as soon as you can test it let me know.

@james can you trying test?

Apologies for the delay. I just tested this and it works fine with my Timeline + MC6 PRO:

The Timeline appears in Nixie2 when the MIDI cables are connected between the MC6 PRO and Timeline. In this instance, the MC6 PRO is just acting as a USB MIDI interface between Nixie2 and the Timeline.

Is your Timeline firmware updated? Here’s what I’m using:
