Has anyone else experienced issues with their MC4 Pro Bluetooth connection disappearing? I was able to connect to it sporadically before, but now it never appears in my list of available Bluetooth MIDI devices (on either my Mac’s MIDI Bluetooth device list or in the Morningstar Editor app on my iPhone). I have an MC8 Pro that does appear consistently on both the Mac and iOS lists, so I assume the problem isn’t my computer.
I’ve tried power cycling the MC4 Pro many times but it never appears available, even briefly. I’ve also tried turning the Bluetooth radio on and off in the General Config menu, but no luck.
Curious if anyone else has experienced something like this and how you might have fixed it.
No, I wish it was something that easy. I tried changing the Bluetooth settings a bunch of times: OFF/0s/10s delay, etc. Didn’t make a difference - the MC4 Pro never showed up in the MIDI Bluetooth list.
Go into the Menu (Press all 4 buttons) and then select View Controller Info. What is the BT Firmware version you see here?
Also, just make sure that it’s not another device connecting to the MC4 PRO Bluetooth. Because once the BT is connected then it will not be discoverable.
It says the BT Firmware version is 0.0.0, which doesn’t seem right given that the MC8 Pro is on v1.1.1.
I don’t see a way to update it — the editor doesn’t have anything for the MC4 Pro Bluetooth firmware, and the Morningstar GitHub doesn’t have Bluetooth firmware for the MC4 Pro (it only has it for the MC8 Pro). Can I use the same .bin file for either one?
Is there a way to check and see if the MC4 Pro is connected to something via Bluetooth? I tried turning off everything else that it might connect to, but it would be nice to confirm directly.
Another observation… the MC4 Pro doesn’t advertise the Morningstar BT Update WiFi menu when I’m in the Update Bluetooth Module Firmware menu in the MC4 Pro config (like the MC8 Pro does). So even if I can use the same .bin file, I’m not sure I could actually upload it to the MC4 Pro.
it showing version 0.0.0 is a problem - that means that the bluetooth module did not boot up.
There is a known issue where the Bluetooth module cannot power up when the 9v power supply does a voltage ramp-up brownout. This happens with the Strymon power supplies when it is switched on from the mains. This issue will resolve if you power cycle the MC again (not from the mains).
If this isn’t your issue, then the next solution is to try updating the bluetooth firmware.
You can’t update the bluetooth firmware via Bluetooth if the module is not running.
You were exactly right - was the Strymon power supply issue again. So frustrating. Strymon’s stupid ramp up feature causes issues with tons of my pedals (Morningstar, BeatBuddy, Keeley, etc.). I’m ready to rip my boards apart and replace everything with Cioks.
When I cycled the MC4 Pro, I see the Bluetooth firmware is v1.1.5, and it’s visible in my list of MIDI devices as expected.
Thanks very much for your help, James. Much appreciated.
