I’m having consistent issues getting Editor to fully sync with my MC4 Pro over Bluetooth on Windows 11. This is also my first MIDI controller, so feeling a bit out of my depth too.
USB connection works perfectly fine, this issue is specific to Bluetooth
When I can get Editor to connect to the controller over Bluetooth, it shows only one preset, and clicking to a different preset triggers a “Loading…” banner that never sorts itself. It’s stalled at different stages on different attempts. For example, I’ve seen “Receiving Omniport data” and “Receiving Event Processor data” hang there indefinitely.
What I’ve tried already:
Removed the MC4 Pro from Windows’ BT & devices settings, so it’s not paired at the OS level
Cleared the device from Chrome’s Bluetooth cache
Turned it all back off and on again (fully power-cycled the MC4 Pro and fully quit/killed Chrome)
Confirmed BT firmware boots correctly (reads 1.1.5, not 0.0.0, so not likely to be the Strymon PSU brownout issue I’ve read of)
Confirmed Editor/firmware version compatibility
After power-cycling both ends, it reconnects but hits the same stall pattern, just at a different point each time. I’ve attached a screenshot showing one example.
Any ideas? Is this a known Chrome/Windows throughput issue with the MC4 Pro? Do I need to live with using a very long USB cable? Alternatively, I would be very happy for someone to tell me this is a user issue, and wouldn’t be surprised if it is, as long as there’s a fix for it. Happy to provide more logs/info if useful. Again, I am very new to all this.
Hi Jim
Unfortunately, Windows has always been extremely problematic with Bluetooth MIDI in general (not just the MC4 Pro) because it has never - until very recently - natively supported BT MIDI…as crazy as that sounds. What you’re experiencing is very common.
I’m not a Windows user (though I have a Surface Pro 8) and haven’t updated Windows 11 in ages but you might want to check that your version of Windows has (and/or is compatible with) the recent BT MIDI update.
My experiences with Windows and BT MIDI (again, not just Morningstar controllers) have always been so frustrating that I eventually give up and return to my Mac.
Thanks Gary. Windows being the problem is definitely the gist that I’ve been getting
What I have found that seems to work is:
Connect the MC4 to my PC via USB to power it
Connect over Bluetooth in Editor
Disconnect and switch back to my pedalboard PSU
Connect again over Bluetooth
It then goes through some processes that it wasn’t before in Editor, that look to be forcing it to find everything that’s on it. In short, it’s got it working properly again.
Time will tell though, I’ve bought a stupidly long USB cable in case the issue arises again. I’ve also bookmarked the resources you’ve shared, thank you
