MC3 -> USB-c midi (or maybe jsut wait for the MC4 pro?)

With UA finally getting on the USBC midi train, I need to rethink my control wiring layouts to convert everything over to USB midi. I currently run an MC3 on a very tight dual UA modeler pedlaboard and I need to figure out a way to get the MC3 onto the USB bus. I’ll end up with two UA pedals, the ML10x and the H90 all on USB C inputs. But how to wire everything up?

I assume the best bet is some kind of CME style 5 pin converter over to a USBA with a off the shelf USB C hub? Alternatively is there a better update on when the MC-4-pro might be coming out? I can’t (alas) fit an MC6 pro on the board.

If you have an MC3, just grab some TRS 1/8” to DIN cables and use those for the ML10X and the H90. On a similar mini board, I have the MC3’s DIN go into a CME H2MIDI, and then my USB MIDI based pedals attached via a USB hub on the H2MIDI’s USB host port.

Alas I need midi-over-usbC to the Universal Audio stuff. I currently have everything on a big DIN-5 daisy chain. (MC3 → h90 → ML10x). The new control topology is MC3 → ?? → (USB 4 way splitter hub) => h90 + Ruby + Enigmatic. The plan is to remove the ml10x or replace it with a ML5 because I’m only really using it for toggling the amps. I might be adding a UA Max, so 4 USB-C midi pedals.

I think the answer is MC3 → CMEPro -or- (wait a bit) and then MC4 Pro → hub. I can’t fit a MC6 Pro.

How do you like the h2midi and what USB hub did you use?

The H2MIDI is really useful whenever I use my older Morningstar controllers (MC3, MC6 mkii, etc.). That or the H4MIDI are probably the best bang for your buck for getting extra modern MIDI IO into those devices. The H4MIDI even has space for their bluetooth midi chip, though I haven’t tried any of that yet. One thing I like about the H2MIDI is that it has some decent USB midi filtering, so you can route different MIDI channels to different USB devices. Occasionally you come across a USB MIDI device that responds to all MIDI channels or has a fixed channel, so that’s useful.

As for the USB hub, I don’t remember exactly what I have under the board right now, but just make sure it’s a pure USB hub and not one that has other stuff like HDMI and ethernet. I recently grabbed a little $6 3 port USB-A hub that worked perfectly with the H2MIDI.

Thanks! I just bought a Mc6 Pro + ML5 for the big board and I think i’ll got with a CME for the little board and possibly upgrade to an MC4 later if/when.
