iPad USB bus power

I’m trying to control onsong on my iPad using the MC-3. My iPad has a lightning connector, and I use the camera connection kit to connect. It lights up and appears to work, but I’ve had a number of crashes occur - iPad goes black and restarts.

Is the iPad able to supply enough power? Or does the MC3 need to be powered separately (eg from my pedalboard power supply).

Is this the same for the newer USB C iPads, which I believe can supply more power?

Not a scenario I use but this page Use Apple USB-A camera adapters with USB-A devices – Apple Support gives indication that if the iPad can’t supply enough power it should pop up a warning. Is your adaptor a genuine Apple one? Sometimes third party hardware is problematic on Apple devices in my experience.

MC3 needs 80mA to power it. This is how much USB Power iPad can handle! │ CCK & Lightning to USB3 - haQ attaQ 303 - YouTube suggests iPad can deliver 180mA.

My guess is it’s not power. Does it always crash when doing a certain thing?

We use the Apple camera adapter as well. IIRC, iPad will disable the connection if the device draws too much power. It seems to occur randomly, usually when the battery is low. You can try leaving the MC3 connected to a power supply and see if it helps.

Alternatively, you can consider connecting the MC3 to the iPad via a Bluetooth dongle like the CME WIDI Jack.
