I Dun Goof' - I Dun Ungoof'd

Last night in my eagerness to install 3.9 Beta , I downloaded firmware file, hooked up, loaded firmware updater, copied the new firmware over, then read the file name 2021-10-15_MC8_Firmware_v3_9_0A_Beta. …
which in normal circumstances would be fine, but my device is MC6. I’m normally really careful about such things, but my enthusiasm took over and, I guess, I rushed.

On reboot, screen on the device corrupted - Windows failed to add USB device.
Device appeared pretty much bricked.

Found the procedure for failed update . .
Took the back of the device off, pressed button , press button and power-up, try again, but getting no where. I could not get Windows to recognise the device, and “USB driver for unknown”
wouldn’t load .

Plugged in to different USB socket, hold button & power up, and then the USB connected and I was able to connect and push MC6 3.87 firmware, and all was good again.

So bless that little reset button, and all that end up having to push it.

I hear you. Been there, done that! But seriously, the fact that the hardware CAN recover from user error like this is great!

Glad to know you managed to resolve it.

The reset button engages the boot-loader (in case of an upload failure and the main processor chip USB comms no longer work), so the computer can detect the bootloader and the user can re-upload the firmware into the main processor.

Ideally, we can make this process smoother, or make the button more visible without removing the backplate - maybe in future iterations. But the chance of this happening (upload failure) is very low though, maybe 5-10 per thousand users - so we don’t expect that button to be pressed very much.

Good foresight to include that, it saved my evening.

Thought I’d share it here in case any other users had a similar issue.

Glad to see I am in the top .5% of users.
