Feature Request: Save current settings to Preset

Hi there, I’ve had an MC6 and MC3 for years and have used them in several iterations of my board, however it’s been a while since I’ve used them regularly so I know I’ve missed a lot of new firmware updates.

I moved to an RJM PBC 6x a while ago for a bigger board I put together. While I love it, it’s quite large with the loop switching & controller in one unit and I find some of the tech to not be as evolved as what the Morningstar stuff can do, especially with the new Pro controllers.

However, what sold me on the RJM (and what’s keeping me from coming back to the MC) is the way they have implemented Saving current PCs, CC states, loops, etc. onboard the unit. No computer required (although you definitely can) or the need to do any sort of MIDI programming once the buttons are set up. I can do it on the fly in a rehearsal very easily without even having to think about MIDI at all. Very intuitive.

For example, on my PBC 6x I have a page that controls my H9. I have buttons for PC +, PC -, CC Bypass, etc. I can use those buttons to scroll up to say PC 7 on my H9, turn my H9 on (which in my case is CC 17, value 127), and then press the “Store” button on my RJM. Then when I press that preset button again, it will automatically send those MIDI messages without needing to manually enter in that midi data on the controller or editor.

Is there any way to do this sort of thing on the Morningstar controllers these days? I really miss the Morningstar controller for the size and the editor for how intuitive it is. But this one thing happens to be a bit of a dealbreaker for me, and seems like something that could definitely be implemented given how advanced the MC controllers are.

Completely agree. I had a similar post awhile back link below. I am still using mc6 pro and ml10x which gives me parallel loops and of course the screens but I greatly miss the ease of the rjm workflow. As you say you can save/adjust presets on the fly. It takes a computer and a lot of careful programming to update mc6 pro presets. Especially when you change your workflow around on your “home” or “template” bank and now have to carefully think how to rework all your banks on the mc6 pro. There’s much to be learned from the RJM workflow and organization that makes things much easier to manage. For example I have screen displays but due to the workflow limits I rarely am utilizing their benefit. Maybe even just if morningstar would designate utility banks into the workflow somehow. Hell I’d pay to have rjm software on my mc6 pro haha

@keg8605 Bummer it’s been that long since you posted that with no great way to do this still. Just seems like a fairly simple/rudimentary thing to implement that RJM controllers have done for years. It would make MC controllers so much more useful when not plugged into a computer.

No. Morningstar still can’t do true on-device “store what I just did” like RJM.

MC controllers are preset-first – you predefine PCs, CCs, toggles in the editor. They do not record current PC/CC statuses and return them to a preset. you can fake it with PC+/PC-, CC toggles, groups, etc., but you still have to construct the Preset manually later.

The reason RJM’s Store process functions is that it takes a snapshot of the current MIDI state while listening to it. Morningstar doesn’t have that capture/write architecture currently. if preserving presets on the fly is crucial, RJM still wins that one.
