[Feature request]New PC numbers to control Jump to bank in MCx midi implementation

Could it be possible to add in the Midi implementation chart of MCx some PCs to do :

  • Jump to last Bank
  • Jump to Bank Number
This could help to gain one or more switches that we must actually dedicate to this.
I am using one preset on each bank to do Toggle Page, Jump back, Bank up or down and with these external PC I could dedicate all this to an external midi switch (as the DOREMIDI exp/switch) connected by usb or the midi bus to my MC8s.
All the benefits of adding an external switch but without consuming and expression connector.
    Thanks

That’s possible. You mean CC messages, not PC messages, right?

For “Jump to Bank Number”, you can already do that with PC messages.

Great for Jump to Bank number, I was missing it.
Why a CC for Jump back to Previous Bank ? No more PC available ?
In term of logic a PC would be better … but a CC will be Ok.

Last question concerning evolutions are you considering midi evolutions as MPE, you certainly have answered this but I can’t find it.

PC messages are (usually - I haven’t seen other use cases) meant for preset/patch changes - in the case of the MC, its used to change banks. So executing functions are done using CC messages.

I haven’t seen a use case for MPE yet. What do you intend to use it with?

Yes PC are traditionnally used for Preset/Patch change via Bank Change, and that’s exactly what is doing Jump back to last bank : bank change to get new presets ?
Concerning MPE, some new synths claim to be able to follow MPE giving more control on each note, but it is just a nice to have.

Typically PC messages are linked to a specific Patch/Bank though right? as in PC#0 is bank 1 and PC#1 is bank 2 and so forth. I’ve never seen a PC message used to bank up or down. That would be more something I’m used to seeing a CC handle. I’m not the most versed in Midi though :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, PC message are usually used to recall Presets (PC = Program change), not to change bank, but in Morningstar they change the current bank…
So in Morningstar logic, when you jump to some bank, you use a PC, so when we want to jump to the last used bank, we should use a PC.
But I won’t fight against the large community of internet young temple guardians  the important fact is to have some midi message to trigger Jump to last Bank.

Post Scriptum : According to many years of midi usage in synths, PC should correspond to Engage Preset on MCxx and they should be used preceeded by a couple of CC 0 and CC 32 to select the bank where the preset should be engaged…
But Morningstar has chosen something non standard, but certainly more adapted to the constraints at the time all this has been conceived. So PC only change bank… Select Bank MSB and LSB ( CC 0 and CC 32 ) are not used.

Makes a lot of sense for a PC to change the closest thing to a grouping of settings for an activity … which in the case of this device is the bank.

I think it’s unfortunate/confusing that the term “preset” is used to describe a button slot on a bank … and that the term “bank” is used to describe a page that is a set of buttons and other settings (and that the term page is used for a primary/secondary view).

If you use those terms then the ask to use PC for button press makes less sense (and a midi Note or CC command seems right).

A bank is a memory bank and the term is very good for MCxx, and preset also, it is generally related to presets in my gears, so very well adapted.

If we change Washington to Moscow things could also make a different worldwide talk…

Yes, PC messages won’t make sense for recalling presets on the MC. Recalling banks makes more sense. Anyway its all just nomenclature.

Yes we can look into adding jump to last bank for the MIDI CC implementation.

Hi @james,

When could we expect a new beta firmware with the ‘Jump to last bank’ midi implementation ?
I am greedly waiting for it to finalize my last MC8s configs where it is a key midi command, do you think it could be done this week /month/later ?
Thanks.

Ive already added it in while fixing other bugs. I’ll publish a beta version of v3.9.4 perhaps at the end of the week.
