Dust inside MC6 Pro

Any tips on getting dust out from inside the MC6 Pro (and perhaps prevention for the future)? I’ve got some dust under the LCD screen covers (and on top of the screens themselves. Haven’t opened the unit yet, but would really like to clean it out (and seal it better). It’s dusty here in Arizona … thanks!

You can remove the board to access the LCDs underneath.

  1. Remove the ribbon cable. Flick the black flap up to release the ribbon cable
  2. Remove omniport nuts + screws holding the board
  3. Pull out LCD board
  4. You’ll see that each LCD is held down by 4 screws. You can remove each and then use compressed air to blow the dust out

I’m not sure where the dust might be entering from or how dusty is it in your environment. Each LCD shied has foam around the edges. In later batches, we started using a one piece foam for all 3 shields.

If you really want to try to seal it completely, you can possibly consider adding silicon around the edges of each LCD. I don’t see any issues with it interfering with any functionalities.

Let me know how it goes!

Thanks James. I will attempt to clean it out in the next few days and report back. I can definitely say that the LCD shields are a bit loose; not sure if that’s by design? I’ll see if anything looks odd when I open it up.

As far as my environment; it can be rather dusty. I have at least one venue where I’m almost performing on dirt; like a packed sand. They provide a large mat (commercial doormat style) and I also use a foam pad that I stand on for comfort, but the fine dust still makes its way onto my pedalboard from my shoes. The only other gear with a “screen” is my looper (Boss RC600) and I haven’t noticed any dust inside it. However the MC6 Pro definitely has some dust between the LCD’s and their shields.

How about the ability to change the characters to white on black like the original? I’m out of warranty and I’ll take my chances with my 69 year old eyes…

Well, I did not remove the screens themselves. It just looked a little delicate, and I was a bit pressed for time. I did blow compressed air between the LCD boards and the face of the unit, and this helped but certainly didn’t get all of the dust out. Maybe I’ll try again with a bit more time and actually get the screens removed for a proper cleaning. I’m nearly certain that the dust is entering around the edges of the screen shields; likely coming off my shoes as I perform. The clear shields are loose in the top cover and can be moved slightly in the openings - is this by design or is there an adhesive that has possibly failed?
