Cloudburst not communicating with MC6 Pro

Hello,

Here’s what I’ve tried to get the the MC6P to send messages to my Cloudburst:

  • connected TRS > TRS cable directly from MC6P to Cloudburst
  • configured Omniport for MIDI Out - Tip Active (as instructed by Strymon)
  • set CB to MIDI (blue), channel 1 (green), & MIDI Out = off (red)
  • sent CC #102, value 127 on Ch #1
    No response.

I’ve also:

  • swapped cables
  • tried multiple channels
  • tried various Omniports and MIDI configurations
  • tested CB’s MIDI functions successfully with Pocket MIDI, so the pedal does not seem to be the culprit.

Thoughts/suggestions welcome. Thanks!

Check the MIDI Channel settings under the Controller Settings and just check that for whatever channel you are using, the Omniports are selected:

Also, just to troubleshoot, have you tried using the 3.5mm MIDI Output port and see if that works?

Hey James,

Thanks for the suggestions. I did verify that all ports were selected/checked for that channel so that has not been the cause. However, I tried the 3.5 port and that did work, so we know the MC6P and CB can communicate with each other. However, I’m wondering what can be done to get the Omniports working. Here are the current configurations used for testing:

I also double checked the ⅛" TRS cables I have and they appear to be functioning fine (they were purchased along with the MC6P).

Thanks
Kyle

Hi, if the 3.5 out is working I’d try ‘Type A (Standard)’ instead.
The type A configuration sends midi on tip, too.

Thanks for the suggestion. For brevity I left it out, however, Type A STD was the way I configured the Omniport at the outset of connecting the MC6P. I did double check it again but alas still no communication. But let’s keep the ideas flowing and maybe we can figure this out!

Can you confirm that the Omniports are working with devices other than the CB? Maybe it’s an hardware issue?
I’ve had a look at the CB’s manual:

Maybe that’s the problem? Did you deactivate MIDI out?

What’s your device serial number? First batch omniports had some issues working with a small number of devices (mainly from JET and BOSS), but we tested with Strymon and it was fine. This issue was solved quite a while back.

Also assuming you have restarted the controller after saving your omniport settings?

S/N 14394. Yes, every time I change the Omniport I have saved and restarted the unit.

Omnis do work with other pedals. I did deactivate MIDI out, thought I don’t think that really shouldn’t matter since I am not using Strymon’s MIDI EXP cable and going TRS instead. According to my conversation with Strymon, that cable (or one wired identically) is required for DIN connections because they do not use Type A (STD) MIDI, they, “…use a TIP ACTIVE scheme, so a Type-A cable won’t work with our pedals.”

Hi James,

I got my CB and MC6 MkII working recently.

I had to make sure the Omni port was set up right, Type A, and set to the right midi channel.

I programmed my CB to use Midi Channel 3 and that solved all my problems. Prior to working, I had it set to receive 4-16 per the CB manual and it didn’t work.

Set CB to midi 3, configured the Omni port to be channel 3, and now we’re in business. Hope that may help.

I’m having this exact issue, have copied the settings in this thread but still not able to get my MC6ii to connect to cloudburst. Has anyone got any further ideas for trouble shooting, wondering if it is the cable as I can’t get any midi to work from omniport, but it does work from midi out with same command.

Would be very grateful for ideas on troubleshooting further.

Here are my settings in editor:

Like the other chap I’m using a stereo cable from MC6 mkii omniport 1.

Here is the omniport setting:

And the cc message:

Hi Yacob, I never was able to get the Omniports to work with the Cloudburst. I was able to get the 3.5mm MIDI port on the side to work. I think this issue may be sporadic and attributable to specific Strymon units and/or the cables used. Testing several TRS cables, I found that some worked and some did not and there was no correlation I could find on why. Strymon also informed me that their cable is important to use because they do not use the same MIDI standard as most other manufacturers. My suggestion is to either try a 3.5mm TRS cable, or buy Strymon’s MIDI EXP cable. Welcome to the ease and convenience of MIDI connectivity !!!

Lol - thanks so much for this. Good grief it’s not straight forward is it? I’ll try these cables and see if that works.

Thanks again, good to know I’m not going mad.

Hey I got this working by changing cable, I was using the stereo cable supplied by Morningstar but changed to one from amazon and it worked. Not sure what the motto of this story is, but I’ve never been so happy to see a little red led light come on.

Does the MC6 Pro support Strymon’s proprietary TRS? I thought you had to buy Strymon’s 1/4 - DIN special adapter (which only does MIDI to the pedal, not from it). Our pay even more for their “Conduit” hub. Thanks Strymon for making the complex even worse.

If so, I’m upgrading my MKII to a Pro

You can use standard TRS cables with Strymon pedals and the MC6 Pro. I have done it with Iridium, Deco V2 and Sunset.

A standard trs will work. But there are known issues with ground loops because the midi ports aren’t isolated properly. The strymon cable has build in isolators afaik.
