Hi, newer MC6 Pro user here. I’ve read a couple hundred posts about expression presets and watched the frequently linked videos, and just wanted to confirm my understanding of how they work is correct, since expression control is one of the must exciting things to me about MIDI and the MC6 pro.
It sounds like
- Expression presets are bank specific
- Each expression preset can contain up to 16 MIDI messages
- This means i can assign 1 expression pedal to control up to 16 knobs\switches on my pedals\devices, and\or
- Use the heel or toe down messages to send another of my 16 total MIDI messages per expression preset.
- I can use individual presets within each bank to turn on\off which expression preset messages are active for the selected preset.
Does that sound about right?
Questions I still have:
- Does this 16 messages per expression preset apply to each port, such that if i connected 4 expression pedals to the 4 omniports, i could control 16 for each pedal, for a total of 64 MIDI expression messages per bank (and thus potentially control 64 different knobs on various pedals)? Or is there some other maximum limit of expression messages per bank?
- If i am using a device that has its own assignable expression pedal controls, will I be able to set those up independent of my MIDI expression messages? E.g. if I want to use MIDI to engage my strymon volante and I’ve assigned an expression pedal to control functions inside the pedal, the pedal settings for that expression control wouldn’t be affected by midi expression messages through the Morningstar unless i assign the Morningstar MIDI expression messages to control those parameters instead? (Side Q–if I’ve assigned an expression pedal connected to the volante within the volante, and a midi expression pedal through the morningstar to the same parameters, will the unit respond to both? Glitch out? Will one override or confuse the other?)
Essentially I’m trying to understand the limits and full potential of expression presets\messages so that i don’t get too lost. I’m really excited about the creative potential here but want to have realistic expectations.
I’m hoping that I get it so far. But you can count me among those who would find this easier to understand if expression presets were not limited to per-bank settings. I’d find this all easier to navigate if i could send 16 messages with a single expression pedal per preset rather than per bank. Given that one of my favorite uses of MIDI is to sweep between settings on multiple pedals at once, the 16 messages per expression preset per bank feels like a slight limitation. I’m sure there’s a good reason for this but before i get too lost I want to set myself up for success by really understanding what i can and can’t do.
Thanks for the clarification in advance!
