Boss ev-1-wl midi expression pedal

Will this be able to work with the mc6mkii??

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/EV1WL--boss-ev-1-wl-wireless-midi-expression-pedal

Edit: to clarify this doesn’t have trs out. It has midi out

In theory you could pair this up with the MC6 but it may not be the function you’re looking for. Seems like this just sends midi ,it wouldn’t control parameters in the morningstar (unless you are trying to control the MC6 with midi.) What is your goal with an expression pedal?

I think you answered my question. My goal was to use it as an expression pedal to control midi parameters on midi pedals through the Morningstar. I was hoping the mc6 would be able to interpret the expression info and apply it to midi pedals. But I guess I just need to buy a regular old trs expression pedal for that.

I’m very new to midi and just trying to figure it all out. I’m betting you all have a list somewhere of the expression pedals that play nice with the mc6ii. I’ll have to look around the forum.

Thanks for the reply!

Yeah you’ve got it. A normal expression pedal (with TRS) offers more control of the MC6 (morningstar reads the pedal position and send whatever midi you program it to send). This pedal you linked is an expression pedal that sends midi on its own. It’ll do what you want to without the MC6 in the picture but I’m not familiar with the flexibility or features of that one. If you have the morningstar already, getting a standard expression pedal will offer you countless possibilities and easier programming I’d imagine.

Yes! I did just get the mc6mkii and watching lots of helpful youtube videos, haha. Seems like this forum may be a better resource.

Now I just have to figure out which compact expression pedal to get from the list @Vindes supplied.

Thanks!

I use a couple Boss EV-30s which work well, are rugged, and compact without being too compact. But I’m a Roland/Boss kind of guy, so I have a brand bias.

Nice–I’ll check that one out.

I had the Boss EV-1-WL working perfectly with my mc6, converting the midi messages it sent on to my other pedals seamlessly. Basically it worked just as a standard expression pedal would once cc messages were mapped in the editor. Thanks to James for the assist!

Fast forward 12 months and I am finally getting around to doing it all again after upgrading to the mc8.
This time around I’m running into problems. The cc message number is converting as expected to cc #51 and #52 for exp 1 and 2, however the value it is sending on to pedals is not changing i.e. not moving back and forth between 0 and 127.

Here is how I have it mapped

Here is the editor info for a preset which should send expression info to my pedal

Here is the midi monitor info when trying to send exp messages

Any thoughts on what I am doing wrong would be appreciated. Hoping you can work your magic again @james

Cheers

After an email exchange with James this was solved by a firmware change and works perfectly!

Best service going around!Thanks James.

Thanks, sorry I missed this thread.

Just to share the issue, it is a bug on our end. This was not working because the MIDI CC# to trigger the expression function also depends on the expression calibration values. So if the heel and toe positions are not set (or not yet initialised i.e. both are set to 0), then this behaviour will occur.

Solution is to calibrate the expression port first for the expression preset you want to trigger with MIDI. We have updated the code for the next release to set these values automatically if the omniport is not set to Exp.

Hi, James. I have been trying to connect my BOSS EV-1 WL through my MC6 Pro to serve different functions on my HX Stomp. I use the TRS-port (Midi OUT) and connect it to MC6 PRO DIN5 IN. Then it goes from MC6 DIN5 OUT to HX Stomp IN. Connecting EV-1 and HX Stomp works, but my idea was to do the following path, so more trouble to come I guess: EV-1 TRS OUT - MC6 DIN5 IN - MC6 DIN5 OUT - Morningstar ML5 DIN5 IN - ML5 DIN5 OUT - HX Stomp DIN 5 IN - HX Stomp DIN5 OUT - Line6 Powercab 112 Plus DIN5 IN. In addition a Jackson Audio Asabi TRS 1/4 OUT - MC6 Omniport 1. I have basically stopped on the first part of the chain, so it all looks pretty gloomy at the moment. I have marked the THRU from DIN5 IN to DIN5 OUT. I have tried converting CC#1 and 11 from EV-1 to CC#51 and 52, as suggested earlier in the post. It feels like I have exhausted every option, so I am currently at a loss, considering returning the pedal. I you or anyone could provide me with a check list “for dummies” to undo this ordeal, I would be forever grateful. Best regards, Magne.

Hi,

that would be my first suspect. Are you using a midi type A adapter to connect both devices?

Make sure the 5pin plug is oriented correctly in the socket.

You could try to use a stereo audio 3,5 trs cable to connect to the 3.5 trs in of the MC. That port is type A and should be working with your expression pedal.

TRS 3.5mm (EV-1-WL) to TRS 3.5mm (MC8 Pro) works fine, so I’m sure it would also work for @Magneram’s MC6 Pro.

Thank you all! I will order a stereo TRS 3,5 mm to TRS 3,5 mm. Just to be clear and mirror my understanding.

In the Morningstar editor:

Check the box for midi thru-3,5 mm to DIN5.

Reroute message CC# 51 (and 52?). Why is that? Because these two messages are the ON and OFF for Expression presets in MC6?

Next change it to CC#1 and from Channel 5 (which is what i programmed the EV-1 as) to Channel 1 (HX Stomp)

Make an EXP preset as normal. I will upload some screenshots. Thank you all for your support. I have spent many hours to try to figure it all out, and this is just the first step of a longer chain of midi-tools and connections. Not a great start, I would say.

Success! In the BOSS editor MIDI OUT: EXP (OFF) CC#51, EXP (ON) CC#52. I put BOSS and MC6 and HX Stomp to Channel 1. 3,5 mm MIDI IN Thru DIN5 box checked. Connection between MC6 Pro and HX Stomp is DIN5 OUT - HX Stomp IN. MIDI message converter: Control Change, from number 51 from MIDI channel 5. To number 1 and MIDI channel 1. Did the same with CC#52 for some reason, but do not know if I even needed it. Put it to number 2. EXP preset: Exprsn CC #1 MIDI Channel 1. Controller assign!n the HX Stomp goes to the EXP 1. Thanks a bunch. Me and my surrounding environment that have barely tolerated me the last few days thank you for your support. You are awesome!

Yeah, paradise was temporarily it seems. When I started working the next chain, troubles started again. I could put in another 10 hour troubleshooting, but I think I will start here this time.

MIDI chain:
BOSS EV-1 WL TRS OUT - Morningstar MC6 Pro MIDI IN - MC6 DIN5 OUT - DPC Micro Gen 4. DIN5 IN - DPC DIN5 OUT - HX Stomp DIN5 IN - HX DIN5 OUT - Line6 Powercab 112 Plus DIN5 IN

My idea is that the MC6 Pro is “the brain” of this whole setup. It controls: DPC and the analogue pedals, HX Stomp and the Powercab, so that I can set up presets on each song we play, to avoid as much tap-dancing as possible.

The EV-1 WL only sends, but I managed as I wrote before to chain it together through the MC6 Pro, and to the HX Stomp. I could control assign every block that usually belongs to ab expression pedal (wah, whammy, delay, volume and so on), so that worked great.

A bit back to square one.

I configured MIDI channels: 1. HX Stomp 2. DPC 3. Asabi (not received yet) 4. Powercab 112 Plus 5. EV-1 WL

The configuration I did is in my previous post, but now the reaction I am getting is that the MC6 is turning itself off. Not the effect I was looking for, so I am reaching out to the hive mind to figure this out, and I will post the solution that works, if you can start to lead a blind man through the jungle.

Much appreciated!

Magne

That’s something that occurs typically if you run into a midi loop. Check your midi through settings in controller settings/general.

That might cause issues. Every device should have it’s own channel. Just make sure that the EV sends on the channel the MC is set to.
